Open Call for Manuscript Submission: Indigenous and Local Knowledge for Adaptive Resilience in Agriculture and Food System Transformation

We are excited to announce an open call for manuscript submissions on the research topic "Indigenous and Local Knowledge for Adaptive Resilience in Agriculture and Food System Transformation" in the Land, Livelihoods, and Food Security section of the journal Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems.

This special issue seeks to delve into the rich reservoir of Indigenous and Local Knowledge (ILK) on land management, examining its critical role in enhancing agricultural resilience and driving transformative changes in food systems. With global challenges like climate change, food insecurity, and biodiversity loss, ILK offers invaluable insights that can shape sustainable solutions for the future.

We invite researchers, practitioners, and scholars with expertise in ILK to contribute their work to this issue. Your unique perspectives and findings could play a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of how traditional knowledge systems can contribute to more resilient and adaptive agricultural practices. Please keep reading for more details.

IPBES supports and draws on indigenous and local knowledge for its work, especially assessments. Readers may also be interested in the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IIFBES).

Suitable topics

Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems welcomes a variety of contributions, including:

  • Original field research that uncovers new insights into ILK applications in agriculture.

  • Systematic or comprehensive reviews that synthesize current knowledge and identify gaps for future research.

  • Policy perspectives that explore the integration of ILK into agricultural and environmental policies.

  • Opinion articles that provoke thought and discussion on the role of ILK in contemporary food systems.

  • Case studies based on focus group discussions, surveys, in-person interviews, or knowledge-sharing events among agricultural stakeholders and Indigenous leaders.

  • Studies assessing the effectiveness of ILK-based approaches and lessons learned from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs), smallholder farmers, and tribal communities across the globe.
