Connecting biodiversity, water, food, health and climate change in ecosystem assessments: from the IPBES Nexus Assessment to national ecosystem assessments

21 March 2025, 14:00-15:00 GMT

In December 2024, IPBES member states approved the Nexus assessment: a thematic assessment on the Interlinkages among Biodiversity, Water, Food and Health.

IPBES products like the Nexus assessment help shape policies and actions at national level: they provide robust evidence and a methodological framework for national ecosystem assessments.

The Nexus assessment illuminates critical connections between biodiversity loss, water availability and quality, food insecurity, health risks and climate change. It identified more than 70 options that help policymakers and practitioners design solutions that provide benefits in several of these areas at the same time.

Join us for this webinar to

  • learn of the key findings from the IPBES Nexus assessment.

  • explore how the Nexus assessment's findings support national ecosystem assessments.

  • discuss how national ecosystem assessments address links between the different areas: biodiversity, water, food, health, and climate change.

  • get key takeaways from BES-Net Trialogues how countries can use the Nexus assessment to inform national assessments and national processes.

About the organisers

National Ecosystem Assessment Initiative

The National Ecosystem Assessment Initiative (NEA Initiative) at UNEP-WCMC is contributing to a world where countries are able to assess the status and drivers of change to biodiversity, and are empowered to transform policies to account for people & nature. It provides trusted guidance and support for national ecosystem assessments around the world.

The NEA Initiative supports countries across five continents conducting national ecosystem assessments. This support is delivered in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) under the umbrella of the Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net).

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network

BES-Net aims to build capacity and commitment for biodiversity action across the world by translating the latest Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) products into action for biodiversity and conservation on the ground.

BES-Net is jointly implemented by UNDP, UNEP-WCMC and UNESCO (providing technical support on Indigenous and local knowledge since 2020), and it is funded by the Government of Germany (through the International Climate Initiative) and SwedBio.
