Co-organised by the NEA Initiative, The Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus, and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan. This webinar is conducted in English with simultaneous translations in French and Spanish.

Gain first-hand insight into a national ecosystem assessment: Global Presentation of Azerbaijan’s National Ecosystem Assessment

The session aims to bring a wide range of stakeholders together to:  

  • Provide an overview of the Azerbaijan National Ecosystem Assessment process, including main findings, policy recommendations and key lessons learned.
  • Provide a platform to discuss the lessons learned and best practices from Azerbaijan that can be implemented in a national ecosystem assessment process.

  • Mainstreaming holistic analysis of biodiversity and ecosystem services in national decision-making
    by Mr. Rashad Allahverdiyev, Project Coordinator Azerbaijan NEA, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan.
     
  • Overview of the Azerbaijan National Ecosystem Assessment process
    by Mr. Yashar Karimov, Project Manager, Director of RECC Azerbaijan.
     
  • Opportunities for Knowledge-Sharing and Reflections: Main Findings, Lessons Learned and Best Practices
    by Dr. Rovshan Abbasov, Khazar University, Coordinating Lead Author on Freshwater Ecosystems and Indigenous and Local Knowledge of Mountain Ecosystems.
     
  • Opportunities for Knowledge-Sharing and Reflections: Weaving Indigenous and Local Knowledge in the Azerbaijan National Ecosystem Assessment
    by Dr. Shahnaz Amanova, Author, Research Institute of Crop Husbandry.

Dr. Thiago Uehara, Head of Policy Innovation, UNEP-WCMC, and Ms. Juanita Chaves Senior Programme Officer, UNEP-WCMC, will welcome attendees and introduce the event.

 

About the organisers

NEA Initiative

The UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) hosts the National Ecosystem Assessment Initiative (NEA Initiative). We support countries conducting national ecosystem assessments to empower the full consideration of the value of nature in decision-making. Since 2017, the NEA Initiative has worked with 14 countries to conduct or scope their national ecosystem assessments.

UNEP-WCMC is an IPBES observer organization and has contributed to a range of IPBES work. It hosts the Technical Support Unit for policy support tools and methodologies.

The Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus

The Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus) is an independent, non-for-profit organisation, established to assist in solving environmental problems as well as development of the civic society in the countries of the South Caucasus.

Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan was created on the basis of the State Committee for Control of Ecology and Nature Use and the State Committee of Geology and Mineral Resources in 2001.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources is a central executive power body that implements state policy in environmental protection, organization of nature use, effective use of groundwater, mineral resources and surface natural resources, and their restoration.
